"V12 Jake- Hittin' Switches" (jbv12)

So one of my fathers best friends bought a W220 S600 around the same time I bought mine. Except he went against my advice and bought a pre 2003 model (a 2001 if I’m correct) for $4000 more than what I payed for mine. Since he bought his car, I can’t think of a period of time longer than a month and a half that his car has been properly working. He’s had tons of problems with the various electrical systems and with the engine it self, along with the omnipresent ABC issues. After he and my father went out for dinner a few nights ago, his car decided it didn’t want to start because something had drained the battery. He then decided to jump his car, which if you do it wrong, can really fuck up your car. Well, he did it wrong and messed up his car. They had it towed and I got to drive my fully functioning S600 to pick them up... He's become very tired of his bad car being bad and now he’s put his S600 up for sale. Moral of the story is don't buy a pre facelift W220.

I think a second moral is to never buy a used luxury car without doing your homework.

I think the moral is to buy something equally as comfy and miles more reliable. Like a Citroen SM.

I’ve found myself being drawn to Mercedes CL’s in search of a replacement for the crossfire. While I’d love a twin turbo v12 I’d be happy to settle for the 5.0 v8 or the CL55 amg if I can find a good one.

Agreed, the pre-facelift W220 (and C215s) are probably only suitable as parts cars now, its the pre-facelift cars that also gave this generation S-Class its bad reputation for rust. No wonder you can get them for 1500 bucks here in the UK.

Yeah, they're not worth much more here

Both are perfectly adequate and have rock solid engines. Just make sure to get the newest and nicest with best service history you can afford. V12's are amazing, but you need to know what you’re getting into and be able to afford the repairs (same goes for ABC).

I’ve found a 2001 CL 500 with 102k miles but it’s in amazing shape and appears to have decent service records. For $7900
On the other end I found a CL55 AMG for 10500 that’s on dub-rims and probably has some sketchy servicing.
I really want 500hp but I think the CL500 is the better option.

Too old and asking for trouble. Everything rubber will be ready to fail and electronics from early ones get to be pretty sketchy sometimes when they get older. I think you’re better off expanding your search area and being patient. I highly recommend looking for at least ‘03, preferably '05.
